The figure wearing red clothing is Emperor Ming-huang. Astride a horse with a braided mane, the emperor rides along a narrow mountain path near towering peaks. The horse has caught sight of a small bridge and, in fright, has refused to move forward. The brushwork in this painting is exquisite and fine, and mineral blue and green give the painting a jewelled effect.
