At 27, he journeyed to China as a missionary and was called to the Imperial Court as a painter. He was skilled in painting figures, birds-and-flowers, and especially horses and dogs. Here, a pair of Manchurian cranes and their chicks repose in a palace garden. Cranes not only symbolize longevity but also marital and parental bliss. As with other works by Castiglione, this one exhibits the fusion of Western modeling and Chinese subject and technique. The Ch’ien-lung emperor’s poem associated with this painting reflects how prized it was. Other:These above pictures are reprints of the famous paintings housed in National Palace Museum.
