Pitanga Puree
General:In its home country Brazil IT has long since been a popular fruit. Pitanga, which was spread by the portuguese, can now be found in the tropics and sub-tropics of many countries.The pitanga is a 3 to 7 meter high evergreen tree with leathery, shiny oval leaves. The shoots are red whilst the older leaves are dark green. 2 CM large white blossoms with long pollen strings grow from the centre of the leaves.The fruit:The fruits are very healthy as they contain high levels of lycopene and vitamin C. the fruits are orange-red, 2 to 5 CM large and have 8 ribs. The aromatic berries hang individually OR in small bunches on the tree and vary in colour and taste depending on the type. Lighter-coloured pitangas taste pleasantly fruity-sour, dark fruits are much more acidic and slightly bitter.Application:Due to its thin skin, the pitanga is rarely exported. The fruits, which are very soft once ripe, are eaten raw as fresh fruit but are also excellently suited for making jams, drinks OR even for preparing spicy chutneys.It contains 2-3 times more lycopene than a tomato! !
