The ammonium salt is the preferred formulation in animals to prevent coccidiosis and to promote growth. Maduramicin is also active against Treponema and Cryptosporidium. Maduramicin is an ionophore, forming complexes with monovalent cations, with a higher affinity for K+ than Na+.
