In 1962, Mr. Pieters was visiting a farm in Namibia, Africa, when he first laid eyes on a sample of this mineral. The stone appeared to be quite heavy for its size, so he took it to his workshop for further study. No sooner than had he cut the stone open, Pieters was stunned by the brilliant rays of his new finding. Mr. Pieters exclaimed, "Of all the gemstones I have seen in the world, this is one of the most beautiful."Fantastic veins and swirls of one rich color, intermingled with thrusts or spots of another color, sometimes even several others, contribute to its remarkable charm. Pietersite does not suffer from the monotonous regularity which many other minerals exhibit. Each and every sample is unique and different from any other. This amazing variety is the essence of its attraction. When you hold it in your palm, you will be dazzled by the richness of its colors. There are reds, which can range from scarlet all the way to deepest maroon. They might be mixed with blues, from peacock blue to deepest indigo. Sometimes, there are flashes, or blades, or purest gold, occasionally even strands of olive green. There can also be spots of white, or patches of clear, translucent material, which are visible when you hold it up to the light. All this combines in a symphony of natures richest pigments.The qualities described above would be more than enough to assure Pietersite a very high place in the affections of gem-lovers worldwide, but there is yet another dimension to its appeal: its remarkable chatoyancy. CHATOYANCY, or CHATOYANCE, is the appearance of a bright, subtly changing shimmer of color which moves along the surface of a gemstone as it is viewed from different angles. Many are familiar with this effect from viewing Tiger-Eye. But while chatoyancy appears in Tiger-Eye in only one direction, in continuously structured bands or fibers, in Pietersite, chatoyancy appears in many directions, in swirls, in swaths or spots, and in fibrous segments. Whats more, Pietersite has three main colors of chatoyance, gold, red and blue, rather than the one color you commonly see in Tiger-Eye. These three colors can appear alone, or in any combination, making endless variation possible. When you hold a piece of Pietersite, and move it in different directions, you will be deeply struck by its chatoyance. You may even doubt your own eyes - surely, such a gorgeous thing couldnt really exist - could it??There has been a sharp increase in the price of Pietersite in the past several years due to a production shortage.
