Ammonium nitrate is a white crystal. The nitrogen lies in two forms of amino-group and nitro-group. The content of the total nitrogen is no less than 34.8%, the molecular weight is 80.04, the melting point of pure ammonium nitrate is 169.1°C, the specific gravity is 1.44 - 1.79g/cm3, the specific heat (20 ЁC 28°C) is 0.422cal/g°C or 87.2kcal/mol, and the melting heat is 16.2xal/g. The solubility is very large in water and higher the temperature, larger it is. It is not sensitive to shocking, punching and friction, and without the nature of spontaneous combustion, but when in touch with sulphur, sulphur-iron ore, acid, calcium superphosphate, bleaching agent and powdered-metal, such as zinc, ammonium nitrate will decompose and release poisonous nitrogen oxides and oxygen which can help firing and lead to fire. When ammonium nitrate polluted by organic matter or at high temperature, it will decompose violently and lead to explode. It also can decompose at 210°C, so, during storage and transportation, please avoid touching with above things and heat insulation. When it fire, please use water to put out.
