Ethylene is a gas that is one of the most basic types of hydrocarbons. Its simple structure consists of two carbon molecules bonded with four hydrogen molecules, giving it a molecular formula of C2H4. Polymers like low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or high-density polyethylene are also produced from this gas, as is acetaldehyde, which can be used to make pyridine derivatives and pentaerythritol(an organic compound with the formula C5H12O4, the CAS number 115-77-5). It is used in the manufacture of ethylene oxide and ethylbenzene, a chemical that can be turned into styrene.
