Name:Poem for the Superintendent CommissionerDynasty:Sung Dynasty Artist:Mi Fu (1051-1107) Printing Size:Length:30.60 cm / Width:63.53 cm Illustrator:Mi Fu, along with Ts’ai Hsiang, Su Shih, and Huang T’ing-chien, is known as one of the “Four Sung Masters” of calligraphy. Through connections, he gained entry to officialdom at court. He went on to serve in Kuei-lin (Kwangsi) and Ch’ang-sha (Hunan), and at 41 was Magistrate of Yung-ch’iu (Honan). Under Emperor Hui-tsung (r. 1101-1125), he was Doctor of Painting & Calligraphy before being sent as an administrator in Kiangsu, passing away thereafter in office. This poem was written as a departing gift for a friend, who was sent as the Superintendent Commissioner of Kiangsi. Mi praised his talent in government, lofty manner, and the value of their friendship. One line also indicates it was written while Mi was in Ch’ang-sha (approximately 1080-81), making it an early work of his. Mi Fu wrote that his early pursuit of calligraphy involved studying the style of Yen Chen-ch’ing, from which he pursued the styles of other T’ang masters before finally delving into those of the Chin masters Wang Hsi-chih and Wang Hsien-chih. His brushwork was handsome with a strong, solemn style that had an elegant and flowing manner. His brushwork was at times angular and rounded as well as light and heavy, revealing his early eclectic studies of T’ang styles.Other:These above pictures are reprints of the famous paintings housed in National Palace Museum.
