Name: Seven-character Regulated VerseDynasty:Sung DynastyPrinting Size:Length:27.10 cm / Width: 48.70cm Illustrator:Kao-tsung was the first emperor of the Southern Sung (1127-1279) and known for his erudition and connoisseurship in painting and calligraphy. In the latter, he began by studying the style of Huang T’ing-chien, but he later turned to that of Mi Fu and finally to that of the Two Wangs (Wang Hsi-chih and Wang Hsien-chih)--going from the Northern Sung back to the essence of Chin and T’ang calligraphy. He wrote many decrees himself, and the stylistic changes evident in surviving ones can be clearly seen. This work transcribes a seven-character regulated verse originally composed by the T’ang poet Tu Fu. It is the first leaf from the album “Works by Sung and Yuan Calligraphers”. Kao-tsung’s study of the styles of Huang and the Two Wangs make for balanced and rounded forms. The arrangement is also open, which is typical of his style. This work once included a painting by the famous Yuan painter-calligrapher Chao Meng-fu, but it evidently was cut off at a later date.Other:These above pictures are reprints of the famous paintings housed in National Palace Museum.
