At 27, he journeyed to China as a missionary and was called to the Imperial Court as a painter. He was skilled in painting figures, birds-and-flowers, and especially horses and dogs. Castiglione was ordered to portray tribute steeds from the western regions. Known as "The Ten Steeds", these large works are almost life-size. Castiglione added Western shading to traditional Chinese methods to create realistic portrayals. This one is known as Piebald (Hsueh-tien-tiao), tribute presented by the Koruin chieftain Nomun Eehetu and painted by Castiglione in 1743.Other:These above pictures are reprints of the famous paintings housed in National Palace Museum.
