Name: White Falcon:1 Dynasty:Ch’ing Dynasty Artist:Lang Shih-ning (Giuseppe Castiglione, 1688-1766) Printing Size(L):Length: 110.00cm / Width: 57.92cm Printing Size(S):Length: 80.00cm / Width:42.13 cm Illustrator:Lang Shih-ning, whose original name was Giuseppe Castiglione, was a native of Milan, Italy. When he entered the Catholic priesthood at 19, he had already studied painting and architecture. At 27 he journeyed to China as a missionary and was called to the Imperial Court to serve as a painter. He remained in the ser-vice of the Imperial Court through the reigns of three emperors: K'ang-hsi (r.1662-1723), Yung-cheng (r.1723 -1735), and Ch’ien-lung (r.1736-1796). He was skilled in painting figures, birds and flowers, and he excelled particularly in painting horses and dogs. In front of a mountain stream, a white falcon is perched on a craggy, ancient pine. The brushwork is Chinese, but the shaded colors are applied in a Western manner. The objects therefore have a three-dimensional effect. Emperor Ch'ien-lung asked Lang Shih-ning to make a painting of this falcon after it had been presented to him as a gift by Minister Hu Heng. Lang Shih-ning was 62 years old when he painted this picture. Other:These above pictures are reprints of the famous paintings housed in National Palace Museum.
